Laidlaw Armaments is a family run company that has been in the weapons business for nearly a hundred years at the time of Ultra Thriller #2, The Alien Factor.  The grandfather of the current owner made a fortune during World War I.  

The Laidlaws have contributed a lot of other technological advances beyond just weapons though.  The Laidlaws have more patents than just about anybody.
