Nancy Drew and the Ransom of the Seven Ships

I am totally stuck.   

I am trying to get the last dial (owl) from the shark cove, but it won't even let me go beyond the stone wall.  Is there some sort of strange requirement before I can go behind that stone wall?  (it's the same wall you go behind earlier in the game).
